Lenscapes – Rust

Rust is in the air.

RUST

In the movies, love is all around us, and so too with hate and all the other iterable obsessions. Here, it’s rust. Rust is all around us, and it is obsessive, ingratiating, pervasive, and persuasive. Rust lays claim to all it can. As a friendly acquaintance explained, urging us to invest in teak and not metal furniture, “Rust is in the air.” Salt, too. Our air conditioning technician, poking his finger at (through?) the bottom of an old AC unit noted the same phenomena with different words. “You are what, a kilometer from the sea? There is no escape from this corrosion on the island.” Things fall apart. The center, if it contains any fraction of iron in the alloy, will not hold. And all the other metals corrupt as well, the powder-white and pitting on old aluminum or the verdigral crust which creeps over all the greening metals – the coppers, brasses, and bronzes.

Most images of rust and other corrosions were shot with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, wide open, & freehand. There is at least one Lensbaby Velvet 28 “Macro” shot in the mix; it’s a versatile lens.
